"When are you speaking to the band?" an inquiry reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple famous admirers have also petitioned for the role.

The evidence suggests a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the best bands, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals repeatedly show them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate others to start a band."

"And thus all is invited to be the next member of Haim."

Award Recognition

The group have called into a break, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the honor isn't lost on the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," adds Alana. "However we're just grateful for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The album was born from a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics follow breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in real life who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to consciously practice shutting out the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound toughness demanded a new sound – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an global fan base.

But Haim will always be their top priority.

"We have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
